The Veneto Region

The Veneto Region, in the Northeast of Italy, is a modern, industrious crossroads, as important today as it has been in the past for its trade with the world. Handicrafts (ceramics, glass, sculpture, jewels, textiles, laces), small to medium industry (chemicals, pharmaceuticals, machine tools, household appliances, electronics, cotton, wool and silk textiles, clothing, shoes, leather products, eye-glasses, food products, liquors) and specialized agriculture (wine, cheese, honey, fruits, vegetables) make it well known in international markets and open to visitor shopping.Satellite view of North-East ItalySatellite view of North-East Italy

Geographically important both for its North-South and East-West axes, the Veneto spreads like its rivers from the snow-capped Dolomites through rolling hills and plateaus to the fertile plains of the Po valley and finally to the Adriatic Sea beyond. The region can be subdivided into three zones: that of the mountains with the evocative province of Belluno; that of the piedmont, hilly and verdant , with the industrious provinces of Verona, Vicenza and Treviso, full of art; and that of the plains with the provinces of the university city Padova with its lovely Euganei Hills rich in hot water springs, and of Venezia and Rovigo bordered by sandy shores punctuated by numerous very well-known tourist spots.

The origins of civilization in the Veneto precede by thousands of years the Roman settlements which contributed so decisively to the aspect of its cities and to the roadway system of the region. The Huns, Lombards, Franks and other European peoples have contributed to the genetic and cultural mingling which produced the Veneto of today. Venice, its most well-known capital city is only a youngster in comparison with other cities of the region which contain a wealth of examples of these different cultures and styles.

Vicenza is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as the “City of Palladio” with many palaces and villas designed by the famous architect, situated in the city and in the surrounding area.

Although the Veneto is proud and jealous of its cultural heritage, it is, at the same time, actively involved in the reality of present day Italy, projecting itself and its products globally along the pathways of its former explorers, emigrants and missionaries. And here at home its doors are open to the world.
