Stemma di Vicenza

Vicenza and surroundings

Vicenza, a city of 110.000 inhabitants, lies in a very favorable position, in the rich plain delimited to the North by the Prealpi (Piccole Dolomiti, Monte Pasubio, Asiago plateau, Monte Grappa) and to the South by the Berici Hills. Panorama of Vicenza

Of very ancient origin, it owed its importance for the Romans to the fact that it was located on the consular “Via Postumia” between these geographic points and commanded, therefore, a good position for controlling traffic. Today the city lies on the main East–West Italian railway connection (Trieste, Venezia, Padova, Vicenza, Verona, Brescia, Milano, Torino) and on the Autostrade A4 and A31. Five main roads radiate from its center in all directions.

Important remnants are preserved from Roman times including arches of the aqueduct, the Berga amphitheatre, the design of the roadway system and many underground structures that can be visited on location or in museums. The long medieval period is represented by numerous churches, bridges, palaces and by the city walls. The Renaissance is introduced by beautiful buildings which precede the time of Palladio, its greatest architect. He enriched its aspect to the point of making it a “Citta’ d'autore” worthy of two inclusions in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The historical center within the 14th century walls is for the most part closed to automobile traffic and can easily be visited on foot. The first slopes of the Berici Hills that creep into the town and contain some of its most important artistic and scenic locations are easily reachable. Both in the city and its immediate surroundings there are many playgrounds, swimming pools, bicycle paths and shopping centers for all pocketbooks. A large variety of trattorie and restaurants with local and Italian cuisine is there for the choosing.

To our guests Vicenza offers the great advantage of being the hub of a larger region which includes all the Palladian Villas, the Dolomites, Verona and Lake Garda, Treviso, Padova, Venice, the Adriatic seashores and even Ferrara, Ravenna, and Mantova, all of which can be visited in a daytrip by car or train.

We represent, therefore, a home base at which you may leave all your luggage and return in the evening, each day, after having chosen your destination according to the weather conditions and to your physical fitness, without being compelled to follow rigid prearranged schedules.
